SGA’s design for a new Pittsburgh regional waterfront park located on the Ohio River presented to the public at a workshop held on October 17th, 2012

October 23, 2012

The proposed 17 acre park with 1,750 feet of Ohio River frontage will be located on the former RB&W Corporation Bolt Manufacturing Plant which is now owned by Moon Township. The project falls within the 40 mile Ohio River EPA Area-Wide Brownfields Plan Area and is located along the proposed Ohio River Trail, a multi-use bicycle and pedestrian trail connecting several major trails in the Pittsburgh and Eastern Ohio regions; the EPA Ohio River Are-Wide Brownfields Plan and the Ohio River Trail Feasibility Studies were performed by SGA in 2010 through 2012. SGA developed a park site master plan which includes recreational and environmental elements identified through extensive public involvement activities and determined from a detailed programming needs analysis. The park’s proposed design carefully integrates the regulatory requirements of a remediation cap to address the environmental conditions of the site while creating unique landforms and public spaces to facilitate a broad range of activities. The fundamental design framework was derived from the notion of circular “threading” patterns indicative of the industrial threading process that was utilized to create bolts at the former manufacturing plant.
