Newtown Creek BOA

Area-Wide and Site Reuse Planning

New York State

New York City & Long Island

The New York State Brownfields Opportunity Area (BOA) program served as a national model for brownfields redevelopment using an “area-wide” approach. SGA and its staff have served as leaders in the BOA program, working on numerous BOAs including pilots in NYC and throughout Long Island.

Working throughout the New York City Metro region, SGA’s experience with New York State’s Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) program is extensive. For Newtown Creek, located at the nexus of Brooklyn and Queens Boroughs, SGA, served as the lead brownfields specialists as well as assistant project managers. The multidisciplinary team hired by the BOA Partners; a coalition consisting of a joint initiative of the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC), Riverkeeper, and the Newtown Creek Alliance.

The BOA Partners were awarded a Brownfield Opportunity Area grant by New York State to undertake a BOA Step 2 Nomination Plan; a major community-based planning initiative that facilitated the redevelopment of brownfield properties. SGA work specifically focused on the ecological planning and landscape architectural design services in support of the BOA planning process for Newtown Creek’s state BOA designation.
