SGA led the public involvement and planning effort as part of a team of consultants for this U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded effort to remediate and redevelop long riverfront corridor of former industrial land along the Kanawha River. The project is focused on creating a new state-of-the-art “green” industrial community, including two million sq. ft. of new industrial warehousing, a mixed-use retail and residential town center and a linear riverfront trail and greenway.
The industrial complex, which is being developed in partnership with the Port Authority of WV will consist of a series of 250,000 sq. ft. LEED certified warehousing buildings located around a new intermodal transfer facility to be developed in partnership with the Norfolk Southern Railroad Corp.
SGA developed trail connection recommendations which include the adaptive reuse of abandoned barges to create a floating river greenway as a way to circulate around several active industrial uses, no longer dependent upon the river for bulk transfer.
