In New York City, and Bronx Borough especially, there are large amounts of underutilized space under the extensive highway network. SGA recently completed the transformation of approximately 30,000 square feet of space underneath of the Bruckner Expressway, turning it into a vibrant community “hub”.
SGA helped to address the longstanding community need for food access, economic development, and intergenerational programming. SGA proposed the use of the area as a semi-enclosed space with a cluster of activities, facilities and amenities that function as a unified community hub. The approach focused on circulation, flow, and how to make this area inviting and a place people want to inhabit.
