Happy Retreat, the rural estate built by Charles Washington (1738-1799), President George Washington’s youngest brother, is located at the edge of his namesake town, Charles Town, WV. SGA is pleased to continue supporting the nonprofit organization, Friends of Happy Retreat to preserve this important historic site for future generations. We are underway on design improvements that support efforts to increase the site’s potential as an events venue and enhance the visitor’s experience. Our work includes making the site more visitor friendly by improving ADA accessibility and sensitively addressing improved vehicular circulation. Another aspect includes improving the historic and ecologic integrity of the site’s landscape, which was identified as a priority in the Comprehensive Site Master Plan, prepared by SGA in 2021.
