SGA spent a great afternoon in the field on Thursday with Teens With a Purpose, a local youth empowerment organization, and with support from the City of Norfolk’s Office of St. Paul’s Transformation and People First. The afternoon was spent sharing knowledge as the students talked about their experiences growing up in the neighborhood and what they learned from Dr. Jeff Kirwan, professor emeritus and forestry specialist, earlier that day. Natalie McCarthy and Mandy Stamnitz taught participants about the purpose and methods of tree inventorying and aided the students as they measured and identified neighborhood trees. The tree inventory will be used to protect historic trees while planning the St. Paul’s blue/greenway transformation and will provide data to support equitable replacements for impacted trees. A big thank you to everyone involved! See Teens With a Purpose’s April Newsletter on their website here: http://www.twpthemovement.org/
